Dear Mr. Vlazakis:
I regret to inform you that your Hurley Hotel has become a crackhouse. Jean has lost all control of the premises, and his recently hired resident managers are afraid to take the necessary action. While the Hurley has always had problems with drug activity, the current problems are so extreme that the hotel tenants are experiencing life-threatening conditions on a daily basis.
I have always liked Jean personally, but he is rarely at the hotel and a building at Leavenworth and Turk requires hands-on management. You are taking a great personal risk in continuing to allow Jean to operate the property.
Based on my experience with similar buildings, I suggest that you immediately hire some off-duty police officers to provide security at the hotel (they can help restrict the inflow of dealers and will deter drug sales throughout the premises). also strongly recommend that you hire a professional management company to operate the hotel. I understand that you will be reluctant to break Jean’s lease, but legal grounds for termination exist, and I am informed that he does not have a great desire to continue operating the hotel.
For the safety of the tenants and neighborhood residents and merchants, your prompt action is required.
Very truly yours,
Randall M. Shaw
