Tenants Protest Sham Bond-Passthrough Hearing
Opponents of legislation that would shift $14.5 million per year from tenants to landlords will hold a press conference and protest outside the Board of Supervisors Finance Committee hearing on Wednesday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m., 401 Van Ness, Room 401. The hearing, scheduled before the wrong committee and on virtually no public notice, is designed to pass legislation raising rents $12 to $160 per year for over 300,000 taxpayers.
Marie Ciepiela of the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco observed, “This is the first time in history that an amendment to the Rent Ordinance was not heard by the Board’s Housing Committee. It was sent to Finance because that Committee includes landlords who could benefit financially from the measure.”
Ted Gullicksen of the San Francisco Tenants Union added, “It’s outrageous that this hearing has proceeded on less than one week’s notice. Most San Francisco tenants have no idea that the Board is about to raise their rents $5 to $15 a month for the next ten years to benefit the city’s wealthiest landlords.”
The greatest tax beneficiaries are the clients of Mayor Brown’s campaign manager, Jack Davis.
The legislation requires tenants and homeowners to pay the entire cost of Proposition A, the de Young Museum bond, while those landlords reaping the benefit of increased property values pay nothing.
Protesters are calling for a widely publicized hearing before the Board’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Committee so that the views of the broader public can be heard.
