CITYWIDE COALITION DENOUNCES HASTINGS LAW SCHOOL’S PROPOSED SEVEN-STORY PARKING GARAGE
A citywide coalition of neighborhood, environmental, housing, and religious groups will join with San Francisco Supervisors to denounce Hastings Law School’s proposal to build a seven-story, 885-space parking garage at Golden Gate and Larkin. A press conference will be held on the steps of the State Building, McAllister and Larkin Streets, at 11:00 a.m. on March 6, 2002.
The proposed garage will be built on the site of two residential hotels demolished by Hastings in 1989. Although the site could hold over 200 housing units, Hastings’ plan includes no housing at all.
According to Brother Kelly Cullen, Director of the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation and a longtime Tenderloin resident, “A parking strưcture at this site, with no consideration for the loss of housing, causes the community concern. Hastings’ plan also neglects the traffic and safety problems that an 800-car garage will impose on our neighborhood.”
Howard Strassner of the Sierra Club agreed, adding, “The Civic Center is a hub for public transit. Housing, not a parking garage, is the best plan and environmental use for the site.”
The coalition supports an alternative plan for affordable and market rate housing and 250 parking spots on the site. As Tenderloin Housing Clinic director Randy Shaw puts it, “We are offering Hastings a win-win solution that will enhance rather than impair relations with the community. The community will unveil its plan at the press conference and will urge Hastings to accept it at the EIR hearing for the parking garage scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at 455 Golden Gate, Hearing Room 9.
Speakers at the press conference will include representatives of St. Anthony’s Foundation, SPUR, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, Religious Witness with Homeless People, San Francisco Network Ministries, the San Francisco Labor Council, the Tenderloin Futures Network, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and Supervisors Chris Daly, Aaron Peskin, and Matt Gonzales.
