Property Management Legal Assistant

About This Position:

The Legal Assistant provides assistance to Tenderloin Housing Clinic’s (THC) Property Management Attorney in all legal matters. Specific areas of focus are assistance with general property management litigation, which includes unlawful detainers, small claims and affirmative cases in which THC is named Defendant/Respondent. The Paralegal Associate executes his/her duties in accordance with THC’s Mission, Core Values, and Customer Service Philosophy.

Job Duties:


• Process and file legal documents including unlawful detainers and related pleadings under the direction of the Property Management Attorney.
• Assistance with drafting 3-day notices, complaints, responsive pleadings, discovery requests and responses, and settlement agreements.
• Aid in preparation for settlement conferences and trials.
• Provide assistance when THC is named in affirmative lawsuits, both in general liability cases and small claims cases, and with responses to complaints filed with public agencies such as the Human Rights Commission, California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, and the San Francisco Rent Board.
• Collaborate with various THC departments and staff working on behalf of THC to prepare responses to lawsuits/complaints, and conduct investigations necessary to provide thorough and accurate responses.
• Assist in maintaining legal files on all lawsuits, including both unlawful detainers and affirmative cases.
• Research and write position memos regarding federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to THC policies, procedures and practices, as assigned.
• Attend, participate in, and facilitate meetings, as requested.
• Consult Housing Retention Plans, THC’s Rental Database, and THC staff as needed, and in conjunction with Director of Property Management and Property Management Attorney, to help determine the best course of action for unlawful detainer cases.
• Research and write position memos regarding federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to THC policies, procedures and practices, as assigned.
• Attend, participate in, and facilitate all meetings, as requested.

Requirements:

• Must have strong knowledge of San Francisco landlord-tenant law and contract law.
• Must be willing to become familiar with San Francisco Superior Court procedures and local rules.
• Must have experience with preparation and filing of legal documents under time sensitive conditions.
• Must have outstanding oral and written communication skills, including being a good listener.
• Must have ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees, clients, and the general public.
• Must have experience or be willing to assist with preparation and filing of legal documents under time sensitive conditions.
• Must have ability to read, understand, apply language, and make independent decisions based on all applicable laws, policies, and contracts.
• Must have demonstrated analytical, critical and strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Must have demonstrated customer service skills.
• Must be a proactive self-starter with the ability to take initiative, develop action steps/goals, and follow through on action steps to goal completion.
• Must read, communicate orally, and write in English.
• Must be able to manage multiple tasks and projects with limited guidance in a fast-paced environment and meet strict deadlines with excellent attention to detail.
• Must pass all post-contingency offer background checks, reference checks, and TB screening clearances.
• Experience working with diverse, low-income, homeless or formerly homeless population preferred.
• Experience working in non-profit or public sector preferred.
